Fellow Toastmasters,

I am very sorry to be the bearer of such totally unexpected and sad news.  John Maginnis, DTM passed away this Monday in Boulder, Colorado where he had moved with his wife, Valerie, last year from Mission Viejo.

John was the Founding Sponsor of the Panasonic Flying Toasters along with Vic Bonacci (Project Management) – without John there would be no club. He was the Area Governor at the time when our club was founded, and acted as the official TI interface, helped with demo meetings, taught us how to run a club, how to run a meeting and explained the DCP. For us, John WAS Toastmasters.

He was an articulate, and dynamic speaker, a thoughtful and effective evaluator and a humble, honest and generous man.  You could always rely on John to help, and over the years he became first a mentor, then a good friend of mine outside of Panasonic and our club and was always welcome at my table. He stepped in to help me conduct my stepson’s funeral and Celebration of Life 2 years ago, little knowing that within months he would be in the same position, and his speaking skills and personal depth was much appreciated.

For those of you that knew him, and at John’s request, there will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday August 11th, 2-5pm at Oggi’s Pizza , 23641 Via Linda, Mission Viejo, CA 92691.

As John once said to me…..

Life is short – As Toastmasters, if there is something you want to say to the World, then don’t wait.
Speak Up, Speak Out, Speak Often.

I will remember John Maginnis, DTM.

Nigel Blackwell
